By car & motorhome to Finland
The ferry replaces about 1,000 km of motorway through Denmark and Sweden. What to know with a car, motorhome, motorcycle or bicycle.
What to enter when booking
Vehicles are priced by length and height. Give exact measurements including roof box, bike rack or trailer – if they don’t match, you may be charged extra at the port. With a caravan or trailer choose the combination in the price search.
The Star ships are freight and passenger ferries with plenty of room on the vehicle decks. Spaces still run out in summer – book early for July and August.
At the port with your vehicle
Travemünde
- Check-in from 20:30 the evening before, closes 2 h before departure.
- Loading from about 23:00; vehicles over 2.10 m board later.
- Need power? Check in by 23:30.
- Over 3.8 m high: check in at the Hafenhaus.
Helsinki-Vuosaari
- Check-in daily 12:00–14:00 (summer from 11:30).
- Loading from about 13:45.
- Vuosaari tunnel closed – detour via Ring III, Itäväylä, Kallvikintie.
- Car park in front of the terminal: max. 2.3 m high.
During the crossing
- No access to the vehicle deck during the crossing – take everything for two nights to your cabin.
- Pets may not stay in the car.
- EV charger (22 kW) at Vuosaari inside the check-in gate.

After arrival
In Helsinki you arrive in the morning with the whole day to drive on – to the Lakeland, the south coast or Lapland. From the port you are straight on Ring Road III.
In Travemünde you arrive in the evening. Via the A226 you reach the A1 towards Hamburg in a few minutes. Not driving far? Hotels in Travemünde.
